Orejas Pan Dulce
This easy Orejas recipe brings the comforting flavors of a Mexican panadería straight to your kitchen. These flaky, heart-shaped pastries are made with store-bought puff pastry, sugar, and butter—perfect for beginners or anyone craving a quick homemade treat. They’re crispy, sweet, and ready in under 30 minutes.

While many countries have similar pastries, the best-known version outside Mexico is the French Palmier. These crispy treats go perfectly with a warm cup of coffee or hot cocoa.
Ingredients Needed
Despite their elegant look, Orejas are simple to make and require only three ingredients:
- Puff Pastry dough
- Melted Butter
- Granulated Sugar

How to Make
If you are using frozen puff pastry, start by thawing it on the counter, usually for 40 minutes, but follow the package directions.
Once the puff pastry is thawed, sprinkle some sugar on a piece of parchment paper or a silicon baking mat. Place the puff pastry directly on top of the sugar and use a rolling pin to gently roll it out slightly. Now flip the sheet of puff pastry over.

Melt butter and use a brush to spread it out on the non-sugar side of the puff pastry. Sprinkle the remaining sugar on the side covered in melted butter. You can also add cinnamon to the sugar mix, but I wanted to keep it close to the original version, which is just sugar.
Fold about an inch of dough from each long side toward the center. Continue folding each side inward, like closing a book, until both sides meet in the middle.

Have the log lengthwise and slice the pastry into half-inch slices. Place each piece on a baking sheet 2 inches apart. Use a spatula to flatten the tops slightly. Put the pan in the refrigerator while you preheat the oven to 400°F.
Once the oven is preheated, place the baking sheet with the sliced orejas in the oven for 15 minutes. Remove and flip each oreja over and bake for an additional 5 minutes. They should be golden brown.

Remove the orejas to a plate and allow to cool for a few minutes before serving. They will get crispier as they cool down.
Store any leftovers at room temperature in a sealed container for up to 3 days. If they begin to soften, then place them in the oven at 350°F for about 4 minutes to crisp them up.
