Crispy Grilled Chicken Wings
Chicken wings cooked on the grill over indirect heat, yielding a crispy skin but juicy on the inside. Toss them in your favorite sauce or seasoning.
These are the BEST Crispy Grilled Chicken Wings I’ve ever had. My husband has been making these chicken wings for years, and they turn out perfect every single time.
This recipe is simple, but instead we’re going to focus on the cooking method to ensure you can create the same results on your grill.
Try this marinade for grilled Thai Chicken Wings.
Ingredients
For the grilled wings you will need:
- Chicken Wings
- Avocado Oil
- Salt and Pepper
I also toss the wings in a honey buffalo sauce at the end. Simply combine butter, buffalo sauce, and honey. Or use your favorite wing sauce.
Grilling Method
After some extensive recipe testing, the method of low and slow yielded the best tasting chicken wing. Follow these 2 simple rules for any type of grill:
- Indirect Heat– Either by using a heat deflector or by heating a gas grill on one side and cooking the wings on the opposite side.
- Low and Slow– Set the grill temperature to 350-375°F and cook them for 1 hour.
I personally do not enjoy my wings when they are charred or taste burned. This method of grilling results in a crispy exterior, without being burned, and still juicy on the inside.
How to Grill Chicken Wings
The chicken wing prep is easy, just place the wings on a plate or bowl, add avocado oil (or any neutral oil), and season with salt and pepper. No need to pat the wings dry, the skin will get crispy.
If you prefer a dry rub, add it now before cooking the wings. Otherwise, toss the chicken wings in a sauce after they are cooked.
The grill we are using is a ceramic grill with a heat-deflecting stone on the bottom grates. When the grill is heated to 350°F, place the chicken wings directly on the grill grates in a single layer.
Close the lid and allow them to cook for 30 minutes untouched. After 30 minutes flip each wing over. You may need to rotate some of the wings if there’s an area of the grill that runs hotter.
Allow the wings to cook for another 20-30 minutes. You want them to have a nice golden color all around. Remove the wings from the grill and they are ready to eat.
Try my recipe for a whole Smoked Turkey.
Honey Buffalo Sauce
The sauce that I tossed the wings in is a simple honey buffalo sauce.
- 1 tablespoon Butter
- 1/4 cup Buffalo Sauce
- 1 tablespoon Honey
Heat the sauce ingredients in a small pan, and stir to combine. Once incorporated turn off the heat and pour over the wings. Toss to combine and enjoy! Try these buffalo cauliflower tacos.
Leftover wings can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Reheat them in a toaster oven, air fryer, or microwave.
